Description

The Millimetron space observatory (project Spektr-M) with a 10-m diameter main mirror space telescope is designated to study various objects of the Universe in the millimeter, submillimeter and far-infrared spectral bands with both ultra-high sensitivity (single telescope mode) and ultra-high angular resolution (interferometer mode) - up to 30 nanoseconds of arc.

The high sensitivity is achieved by deep cooling of the telescope's mirror system and receiving equipment. High angular resolution is provided by the location of the observatory near the Lagrange point L2 of the Sun-Earth system, located at 1.5 million km from the Earth in the anti-solar direction. Key scientific tasks of Millimetron observatory are are intended to resolve fundamental astrophysical problems.

Customer: RAS, ROSCOSMOS
General contractor: Lavochkin Association, JSC
Scientific payload developer: Astro Space Center of PN Lebedev Physics Institute
